TORONTO -- The Adirondack Phantoms got off to another slow start and never recovered in a 3-0 loss to the Toronto Marlies on Friday night.

For the sixth time in their first nine games, the Phantoms (4-4-1-0) gave up the first goal of the game. They are 2-4 in those six games.

Toronto led 2-0 after a first period it dominated.

Ryan Hamilton scored twice for the Marlies and Scott MacDonald made 19 saves for the shutout.

Playing in place of the ill Johan Backlund, who did not dress, Nic Riopel made 22 saves on 25 shots.

Offensively, the Phantoms could muster just 19 shots. Adirondack came into the game with 19 goals on the season, the lowest total in the American Hockey League.

The Phantoms went 0 for 4 on the power play, moving their season total to 5 for 39.

Stefan Legein moved to the right wing of the top line, replacing David Laliberte.

The Philadelphia Flyers recalled Laliberte earlier in the day to replace the injured Danny Briere.

The new line, with Jon Matusmoto centering Pat Maroon and Legein didn't fare well. Each player was a minus-3.

Captain Jared Ross was scaratched, along with Johan Backlund, Sean Curry and Jon Kalinski.

The Phantoms had been fighting a flu-like illness this week.

Rob Bellamy, injured in a preseason practice, played for the first time this season.
