BRIDGEPORT, Conn. -- The Adirondack Phantoms scored three times in the third period to rally from a one-goal deficit and beat the Bridgeport Sound Tigers 4-2 on Wednesday morning. The game was played in front of a school-day crowd of 8,035 at the Arena at Harbor Yard.
The win is the second for the Phantoms this season in Bridgeport.
Defenseman Joey Mormina had a goal and two assists and Jon Matsumoto had a goal and an assist. Stefan Legein and Andreas Nodl also scored for Adirondack (6-4-1-0). Mormina, who came into the game with no points on the season, left with three and was the game's first star.
The Phantoms power play, which came into the game 5 for 49 on the season, had it's best day of the season, converting on three of nine chances.
Matsumoto gave the Phantoms a 1-0 lead 17:15 into the first period. Matsumoto has five points in his last two games and 10 in his last six.
Bridgeport's Greg Mauldin scored the game-tying goal late in the second on a penalty shot. Mauldin struck again 10 minutes into the third period, giving the Sound Tigers (7-7-0-0) their first lead of the game.
But Adirondack had an answer just 10 seconds later. Off the faceoff, Pat Maroon fired a shot on Bridgeport goalie Nate Lawson from the left wing. Legein cleaned up the rebound to make it 2-2 and score his second goal since joining the Phantoms.
From there on, it was all Phantoms. Nodl put Adirondack up for good with a power play 15:08 into the third. Mormina sealed it with a wrister from the blue line that sneaked past Lawson.
Johan Backlund made 29 saves on 31 shots to earn his fifth win of the season.
The Phantoms, who have won two straight, travel to Albany on Saturday at 7 p.m.
Loose pucks: Jon Kalinski played after missing his last two games with the flu ... Defenseman Sean Curry and forward Krys Kolanos each sat out the game with injuries ... Defenseman David Sloane made his season debut with the Phantoms. He was called up from Elmira on Tuesday to replace Curry.
