GLENS FALLS -- We know they can skate, but can they cook? That's the question Michelle Capron asked herself, and the answer has sparked the most successful fundraiser that the Glens Falls Figure Skating Club has ever had.
Capron is president of the club, and several years ago, she thought about putting together a cookbook based on recipes submitted by skaters.
"I thought, wouldn't it be great if we could get some famous skaters to submit recipes for our cookbook," Capron said.
When Facebook exploded onto the Internet with its networking capabilities, Capron's job of contacting skaters around the world became a whole lot easier.
"I found a ton of them on Facebook," she said. "With that and e-mail, it really took off."
She said she received an e-mail from a guy who sets up skating rinks in China for competitions, who knew many famous skaters that he shared.
"One night, the phone rang, and after I hung up, my husband asked who it was, and I said, ‘Oksana Baiul,' and he said, ‘Right, and I'm Scott Hamilton.'"
It was Oksana Baiul, 1994 Olympic skater from the Ukraine, hoping to submit a recipe for the club's cookbook.
"The enthusiasm among the skaters was amazing," Capron said.
"They thought our little club's cookbook was a cool idea."
She had about 50 orders for the book before it was printed.
"Some skaters had a hard time translating their recipes into English," Capron said. "I had one German and one Russian that were confusing to read."
The cookbook also contains recipes from skating coaches, others in the skating field, as well as recipes from Glens Falls skaters. Capron said that so far, more than 200 of the books have been ordered, and if things continue as they have been, she hopes to raise more than $4,000 for the skating club.
"We're hoping to clear between $4,000 and $5,000," she said. "This club has been struggling financially for 28 of its 30 seasons, and this will help to support our learn to skate programs, ice time, coaching and other costs."
"Figure Skaters Favorites: A Collection of Recipes from Figure Skaters Around the World" has 450 recipes from more than 270 skaters, including chocolate-covered deep-fried bananas by Daniel Aggiano, a 10-time Czech champion and 1992 Olympic bronze medalist; Oksana Baiul's peach-glazed chicken breasts; cream of broccoli soup by Tanith Belbin and Benjamin Agosto, silver medalists in the 2006 Olympics; seven-hour Australian roast of lamb by Liz Cain, who with her brother Peter, are four-time Australian champions and 1984 Olympic Champion Scott Hamilton's wild rice medley.
Try Alplermagronen mit apfelmus, or Alpine herdsman's macaroni, by Swiss brother and sister skaters Eliane and Daniel Hugentobler, or pizza by Todd Eldredge, three-time U.S. Olympic Team member that contains the ingredients "phone directory and telephone."
The cookbooks are $20 and can be found at skaterscookbook.com or by calling Capron at 747-6571.

Do you kick it up a couple of notches on one Sunday in February and transform your living room or man-cave for the occasion? Or maybe you are keeping it simple, but will proudly wear your Colts or Saints team colors this weekend. The Post-Star is seeking people who do something special on Super Bowl Sunday for a potential story or photo. If you want to play ball, contact Post-Star Weekend Editor Todd Kehoe at 742-3259 or e-mail tkehoe@poststar.com.
