HUDSON FALLS -- Police are investigating how 300 marijuana plants wound up growing earlier this month inside a vacant Main Street building, a building that is being renovated for senior citizen housing, police said.
Hudson Falls Police found the plants early the morning of Oct. 10 inside the former Napa Auto Parts building at 264 Main St., said Hudson Falls Police Detective Scott Gillis.
Gillis said police went into the building about 2:10 a.m. that day after getting complaints about people trespassing inside.
Patrolman Ryan Pedone found that a rear door had been forced open and when he went inside the building he found marijuana plants of various sizes growing in four different rooms. He was unable to locate who had been inside, but police then got a search warrant to look through the building and seize the pot plants, Gillis said.
An elaborate operation of lights and water hoses had been set up for the plants, police said.
"Somebody had found the stash and had broken into the building to steal the plants," Gillis said.
Gillis said the building is owned by South Glens Falls resident Peter Phair, who has been renovating it to turn it into apartments.
"I don't know if the plants were for medicinal purposes for the seniors or what," Gillis said.
He said he has tried to discuss the matter with Phair, but Phair has refused to be questioned and instead referred questions to his lawyer, Joseph Brennan. No one has been charged.
A phone message left for Phair on Wednesday was not returned Wednesday. Brennan said Wednesday he had no comment on the matter.
Anyone with information in the case is being asked to call village police at 747-4011.
