as a matter of fact, yes. Those are perfect examples of why govt needs to keep their hands out of the health care industry. Nothing that they touch works! There definitely needs to be reform, but takeover isn't the way to go. That's NOT why this government exists. Check the founding documents, ie the Declaration of Independence and the Constitution.
Start with tort reform and really get at some of the root causes. Don't cover illegals...there are ways of doing this without dismantling a system that, for the most part, works.
With this administration it's all or nothing, that scares me.

Amazing how the opponents of this bill are so quick to scream socialism/communism. Do you get so crazed about the VA healthcare system, Social Security, or Medicare?

    Smith29-2,
"Its a shame that with Veterans Day only a couple of days away that everything they fought for is being ruined by the Obama/Pelosi/Reid crowd in DC."

WHAT?! Did they take away my freedom? Did they suspend The Constitution? I am a veteran and I don't feel that way. Can the faux patriotism, especially if you never served.

    cg57,
Where does it say that you cannot? Who regulates Medicare? I hope you don't have any family on Medicare.

I wonder what you tell a child or young adult who falls ill with cancer and has no health coverage. Tough crap?

"dictate what coverages I choose to purchase." What? You don't understand option, do you?

Betraying his party?! Are you serious? How about upholding the US Constitution. How about doing the will of the people, which by the way do not ALL support this monstrosity of socialism called a health care bill.
For whatever reason, he used the pause button and listened to a lot of his constituents.
Now the Senate has to do the same.

to those critical of Murphy's vote, read his statement issued explaining his vote. This bill puts taxes on medical device manufacturers and paper companies, two big employers in this district. He is protecting his constituents by a vote against it. It also appears you may actually be in the minority when it comes to this issue, at least on this board anyway. I'd also ask, what do paper companies have to do with healthcare and why single them out? Why not tax all manufacturers, heck, if you are trying to kill jobs, spread the pain around instead of picking on one industry that has nothing to do with the underlying issue.

Its a shame that with Veterans Day only a couple of days away that everything they fought for is being ruined by the Obama/Pelosi/Reid crowd in DC. This is socialism at its finest. How much is this going to reduce the deficit? Not a bit. But now the government can tell you when and what your medical service is going to be? Is this what you really want?

Everytime I hear a newscaster mention that 39 democrats
voted against the House health reform plan I get angry
yet again because my Congressman...Scott Murphy ...was
    among them.
I feel Murphy betrayed his party in an effort to cozy up
to republicans and improve his chances for re-election.
But...that will not work. Democrats who support health
reform will remember this betrayal...and republicans won't
for for him in any event. Sooo ....looks like just one term
for Congressman Murphy. I am now ashamed to admit...I voted
    for him.

Our government does not have a good track record with running large scale health care systems. Medicare and Medicaid have been messed up for years and they still can't figure out how to fix it. So now they want to have thiws health care bill? No thanks.

incredible, long time no talk. I'll ask you the same question I've been asking on my postings on other articles, where in the constitution does it allow for congress to impose a mandate for the purchase of any service? And if we allow them to impose this mandate, where can we draw the line. What if they then say, well, everyone should have their own long term disability and long term care policies as well. Now, I have those policies and think they are a good thing, but I'm in the minority. Most people can't afford them. But it certainly isn't the governments job to dictate what coverages I choose to purchase.

    albert ,
Not sure what you are getting at. Do you know what it costs now for a family plan on a job. Currently a family plan at my job costs $438.00 month. There are people at my job only making $50k - $60k year. That is not an easy expense for many these days.

I am glad it passed! Now we can see just how much of a "threat" this will be to America, as per the Beck and Limbaugh crowd. Should be interesting to watch the opposition this week.

How come I have no idea how much this "threat" will cost ME?
You are well informed...how much will it cost a family of 4 with an income of 80,000/year?

Ed-"And now it's time to do the REAL math"

Oh, save the con job, Ed. Countries around the world ensure their citizens enjoy affordable, quality health care..and almost all with the so-called 'public option'. Many with government-sponsored health plans far, FAR more generous than what's on the table in congress today. Yet, 'small business' in all those countries have not gone broke. Go up to Canada...there is no lack of 'small-business' anywhere there. There is just as many hotels, motels, bars, restaurants, gas stations, convenience stores, etc etc in Canada as there are here in the USA. Yet they pay their fair share...and their products and services are no more costly for the consumer than they are here.
Perhaps small business in other countries are not QUITE as greedy as they are here, however. Perhaps business owners in foriegn lands don't MIND foregoing that extra SUV or extra chartered fishing trip for the common good.

Thank you Congressman Murphy for voting against socialized healthcare. I equate socialism to a cancer that feeds itself on living flesh until it kills the body. Witness the USSR twenty years ago. Also, I have heard that a social program uses 45% of it's budget to support the administration of that program. 45% of 1.2 trillion dollars is..... You're going to have to figure that out for me. I don't want to think about it.

And now it's time to do the REAL math, not the fuzzy kind that these politicians use. For example, a small business employing 4 people with a gross annual payroll of $100,000 not offering health insurance will have to generate $8000 more per year in income to pay the health care fine. That means that they will have to charge their customers 8% more for the cost of the goods or services they provide. Other commercial customers of that small business will have to generate that cost plus any costs that they require to cover either their increased health costs or their fines while all employees will pay the 2.5% tax on durable medical goods that they or their family members may need. Overall,at the grocery, hardware, auto repair, hair salon, the general cost of living will skyrocket and salaries will not keep pace and will be further impacted by cap and trade. More likely, there will be further unemployment as small businesses just shut their doors. With the current state of the budget in NYS, it will become even more unaffordable to live here much less run a business in NY.

Good for Murphy for listening to your constituents! Too bad the rest of the Dems were strongarmed by the current administration to pass this threat to freedom. One can only hope that the Senate pushes the pause button on this horrible bill.

Thank you Congressman Murphy. For those that question the Congressman decision please read the bill before you judge. This bill offers none of the cost savings promised. During the bills debate not one report was offered stating how much would be saved; instead Employers will be required to pay more, States will be paying more for medicare and individuals will be forced to buy insurance or be fined or jailed. There is no mention that premiums will drop or that the upward cost spiral will not continue. This bill does offer layers of new bureaucracy; employers are required to provide employees personal information to as many as four new agencies. The cost of operating these agencies do nothing but add to the cost of health care. More government is all that is promised in this bill. Thank you Congressman Murphy for making the responsible decision.

It looks to me like only 39 of those representatives listened to their constituents, so they're the only ones who stand a chance of being re-elected when their present terms are up. I know in the past, voters have forgotten reps. dumb mistakes, but I doubt they'll let this one pass, it's too memorable and too costly for us to forget. How much more of this obscene spending do they think we can take? How many more rights are they going to rob from us before people say "Enough"! I for one refuse to let them get away with this. They shall all hear my screams all the way to DC!

I can say this....I and the other 8 registered-to-vote members of my family will rethink our support for Congressman Murphy.

If we wanted our congressman to support the theft of our dollars by the health insurance companies, we would have voted Tedesco....he's good at that.

But we did not expect that from Murphy.

We rue the day Patterson took Senator Gillibrand from us.
