SARATOGA SPRINGS -- The recession is over for Bryan Ireland.
The 26-year-old supervisor for Direct TV, who lives with his parents in South Glens Falls and struggled until last week to pay student loan bills, scratched his way to a more stable future on Oct. 17 at the Stewart's Shops on Glen Street in Glens Falls.
He won the $1 million prize with a New York Lottery Smooth 7s instant ticket and can now look forward to getting a check for $33,015 - after taxes - every year until 2028.
The instant scratch-off game doesn't come with the lump-sum payment option like some lottery games do.
On Thursday, Ireland and his family painted a picture of how the big win unfolded, during a ceremony at the Saratoga Gaming & Raceway.
"I was home mowing the lawn, and he came running down the back hill," said Ireland's father, who is also named Bryan. "He said, 'Dad, you're not going to get any more calls from creditors looking for money.' Then he showed me this ticket that he had a death grip on."
Ireland said on Thursday he plans to take some of his family members on a cruise to celebrate his win, and his sister, who just got married, is going to be getting some extra nice presents.
Oh, and Ireland is going to buy a house of his own, he said.
Other investments will also be considered, although Ireland wasn't sure which ones he was going to pursue on Thursday.
"There are a lot of windows open, and new opportunities," he said.
Ireland is the fourth lottery "millionaire" from Saratoga County this year and the 97th statewide, according to New York Lottery statistics.
Lottery officials are still waiting for the winner of $250,000 in the Mega Millions lottery who bought a ticket at The Old Station Inn in Greenwich in late August to come forward.
