The local incumbent and a Schenectady County judge were still leading in a four-way race for two seats in the state Supreme Court's 4th Judicial District, according to unofficial results from The Associated Press on Wednesday afternoon.

As of 4 p.m., with 98 percent of precincts reporting, current Supreme Court Justice Thomas Mercure of Hudson Falls and Schenectady County Surrogate Judge Barry Kramer had 80,203 and 79,981 votes, respectively, with 798 of the 811 precincts counted.

Essex County Judge Richard Meyer of Saranac Lake and Bellmont attorney Brian Stewart, who grew up in Glens Falls, trailed with 60,599 and 59,219 votes, respectively.

The four candidates fought for two seats in the 4th Judicial District, which covers 11 counties in the northernmost part of New York.

The district's two seats came up for a vote after the retirement of state Supreme Court Justice Jan H. Plumadore and the end of Mercure's second term.

The margin between the top and bottom two vote-getters is sizable with just about all precincts reporting, though there are thousands of absentee ballots that have yet to be tabulated.

There are 13 state Supreme Court justices in the 4th Judicial District, which spans Clinton, Essex, Franklin, Fulton, Hamilton, Montgomery, St. Lawrence, Saratoga, Schenectady, Warren and Washington counties. The district is the state's largest, geographically.
