FORT EDWARD -- Washington County residents this week began receiving the ProAct discount prescription drug cards.
More than 30,000 county residents are expected to receive the card, which can be used through direct mail, local pharmacies and service organizations.
To use the card, participants must present it at the time of purchase at either a chain or locally owned pharmacy. Brand-name, generic and pet medications are covered under the program.
There is no minimum income to participate.
The county Board of Supervisors approved the disbursement of the cards earlier this year, at no cost to the county.
Hebron town Supervisor Brian Campbell said the uninsured and underinsured will benefit most from the program, which is endorsed by the New York State Association of Counties.
Warren County signed up for the program earlier this year, with its residents receiving the cards in May. Onondaga, Cayuga, St. Lawrence, Oswego, Madison, Seneca, Lewis, Jefferson, Fulton, Franklin, Steuben, Delaware and Schenectady counties also participate in the program.
Residents may call the ProAct help desk at (877) 776-2285 for more information or visit www.proactrx.com.
