A South Glens Falls man was jailed in Dutchess County this week after he allegedly set his truck on fire and fired off a shotgun near the home of a woman who formerly taught him at a community college, police records show.
Gregory J. Burnell, 47, faces a felony stalking charge and a misdemeanor count of reckless endangerment in the Sunday night incident outside a home in the village of Rhinebeck, the State Police public information Web site shows.
Police told The Poughkeepsie Journal newspaper that Burnell set his truck on fire with the aid of gasoline in a residential area in Rhinebeck, near the home of a woman he knew, at about 10:30 p.m. Sunday.
When neighbors came out of their home as the fire burned, Burnell allegedly emerged from nearby woods and fired at least one shot from a shotgun, before fleeing the area on foot, State Police told the paper. He left the shotgun behind, and the truck fire burned itself out, police said.
A search of the area ended about three hours later with Burnell's arrest as he walked along Route 9G, police records show.
Burnell was arraigned and sent to Dutchess County Jail for lack of bail.
