ARGYLE -- Richard C. Dalaba, 86, of West Street, passed away on Monday, Nov. 2, 2009, at the Indian River Rehabilitation and Nursing Center in Granville.

Born in Lake Luzerne on Feb. 21, 1923, he was the son of the late Andrew and Edith (Westcott) Dalaba.

Richard was in the U.S. Navy during World War II and served in the Pacific Theater aboard the USS Hunt and the USS Reybold. He was honorably discharged in 1945.

He worked at the Underwriter's Insurance Company, later to become the Continental Insurance Company, as a regional field supervisor. Richard was often called upon to respond to disaster locations, such as South Carolina in 1989, when it was struck by Hurricane Hugo. He completed 43 years of service in the insurance industry before his retirement.

On April 22, 1943, he married Eleanor Sharpe in the Glens Falls United Presbyterian Church. Together they shared their love for each other for more than 66 years and were each other's constant companion.

Richard was a member of the Argyle United Methodist Church for over 40 years and served in many administrative positions with the church, including president, treasurer and trustee.

Richard enjoyed working in his garden, being outdoors and even just mowing his lawn. He also liked to refinish furniture. One of his greatest delights was eating and he would make any excuse for an opportunity to take Eleanor out for lunch or dinner.

Besides his parents, he was predeceased by a daughter, Carolyn Finn, in May 2009, and he was the last surviving sibling of six brothers and sisters in his immediate family. He was also predeceased by a very special uncle, Addison Wescott, who helped to raise him.

Survivors include his wife, Eleanor Dalaba of Argyle; a grandson, Jason R. Finn, and his wife, Suzanne, of Gansevoort; a son-in-law, Alan Finn, of Greenwich; a brother-in-law, Robert E. Sharpe of Clifton Park; and a sister-in-law, Alice Gillis, of Argyle; as well as several nieces, nephews and cousins.

Friends may call from 4 to 7 p.m. Friday, Nov. 6, 2009, at the M. B. Kilmer Funeral Home, 123 Main St., Argyle. To send a condolence or view the Book of Memories, please visit www.kilmerfuneral

Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 7, 2009, at the Argyle United Methodist Church, Sheridan Street, Argyle with the Rev. Deb Peacock, pastor, officiating.

Burial will follow at Prospect Hill Cemetery.

A reception for family and friends will be held in Sheridan Hall at the church following the services.
