With a planned opening of Nov. 18, new owners John and Lorraine Murphy have spent the past month renovating the former Spa City Cupcakes space in anticipation of the launch of their retro-flavored Bettie's Cupcakery Cafe at 454 Broadway, Saratoga Springs.

Their cafe, in the Marketplace Mall, will have a 1950s feel.

"It was an age of innocence and life was simpler and slower-paced," Lorraine said.

The couple plan to feature gourmet sodas and coffees, hot chocolate, root beer floats, fondue and cupcakes. In addition to their standard five flavors, they plan to offer "Happy Hour" - flavored cupcakes for adults like rum, Irish coffee and pina colada.

They're also mapping out a route in the Capital Region for their mobile cafe, a vintage English double-decker bus that will hit the road as of December.

"It's what makes us stand out," Lorraine said. She expects the cafe will appeal to kids and adults alike with a make-your-own cupcake bar with 743 possible flavor combinations. She also envisions her business being a spot for a "romantic date night."
