Another election behind us

Every two years, we are faced with one of our most daunting coverage challenges when the vast majority of local elections are held.

Hopefully, our readers noticed the comprehensive coverage in Wednesday’s newspaper. Most readers are only interested in one or two races in their town so the scope of the coverage probably does not register.

We again had all hands on deck for our election coverage Tuesday. Our City Editor Bob Condon annually puts together a comprehensive plan on how to get all the races covered and still get close to our 11:30 p.m. deadline.

We had a bit of a scare this year when a couple members of the copy desk called in sick on Monday, leaving us scrambling to come up with a plan if we were short-handed on the copy desk.

Thankfully, we were at full staff.

This year we also had three people devoted to putting the election results on our Web page as a service to our readers. By 10:30 p.m., all the results were online and we were filing stories for the Web page.

By midnight, we had put the print product to bed — only 30 minutes past the regular deadline — and put another Election Day behind us.

It is a lot of work, but I think most of the staff looks forward to the yearly challenge and the excitement of the live coverage.
