Obama coming to Saratoga County?

Our news partners at WNYT are reporting that multiple sources say President Obama is considering a trip to Saratoga County next week.

A visit from the Commander-in-Chief was being talked about when GlobalFoundries approached their official groundbreaking ceremony at the Luther Forest Technology Campus earlier this year, but never developed. Vice-President Joe Biden came to Clifton Park instead.

Now, those rumors are cropping back up.

Law enforcement sources are suggesting that the Secret Service has been making inquiries, and several others who are closely connected say they’re hearing rumbles about a visit, too.

GlobalFoundries spokesman Travis Bullard, in an e-mail exchange with The Post-Star this afternoon, said he’s also heard the rumor but that he didn’t “know anything definite.”

Such a trip would make some sense, though: Obama will be in New York City next week, and unemployment numbers are still sour a year after the collapse on Wall Street despite the hundreds of millions in tax money that have spent to prop up the economy.

GlobalFoundries’ promise to create 1,400 jobs when it comes online in 2012 would seem to run counter to that trend, offering some degree of hope to out-of-work Americans.

He would also have a decently receptive audience here: Obama took 51 percent of the vote in Saratoga County in the general election, and had a number of well organized local supporters throughout the campaign.

Stay tuned.
