Glens Falls gets it done

(edited Sept. 11)

One of the most excruciating parts of field hockey is that one team can get the better for more than 75 percent of the game, and all it takes is an instant and none of that matters.

That’s how it went down Thursday when Shauna Rankin-Byrne sprinted to a breakaway goal, the only one in Glens Falls’ 1-0 win over Queensbury.

Yep, this might not be a dominant Indians team, but beating them is still going to take a superior effort. How do they stay on top? Finds like Rankin-Byrne, a freshman who I never heard of before a few days ago. Tasked with filling the offensive firepower of Lauren Winchell — not that any freshman could do that — she’s has a goal and three assists in the Indians first three games. The Indians are a winning program, and that muscle memory, as well as some good young talent, has helped to keep them strong in the early going.

Interesting to see that Brittany Daniels got the start in the cage for the Indians. She’s a strong field defender. However, I didn’t expect her to be the field hockey goalie. One-time deal, or will we see more of her against the top teams?

For Queensbury’s sake, have to take heart that statistically they dominated the game. Bounces can just as easily go the other way next time. Still very early.

So what do we make of Warrensburg going to two overtimes to beat Salem 1-0 in its opener? Burgers are in a position quite like Glens Falls of trying to find the right mix of talent to defend their titles. Salem is a decent team that plays a lot of close games and has a good goaltender in Kora Andrew. Always dangerous to play the comparative score game –  it’s fun, though, isn’t it? – but Johnsburg beat Salem 5-1 earlier in the week. Too soon to ready anything in?

As a side note, previews are all done. Just waiting some space for for them to run in the paper. Hopefully next week. Keep those rosters coming to tmcmanus@poststar.com

The goalie for GF girls field hockey seemed solid and well coached. Awesome job girls.

Ah, you’re right. Sorry about that. I hate to say it, but that isn’t the first time I mixed the two Brittanys up. I did it last year too. My apologies. I’ll fix the post.

Tim, Brittany Daniels does not play ice hockey. You are thinking of former GF FH defenseman Brittany Wilson, who played goalie for the Adirondack Northstars girls ice hockey teams.
