Seed trains

Lower Adirondack PlantCycle is a Yahoo Group for gardeners. Gardeners new and old, beginners and masters, are welcome to join through group as long as they garden in the foothills of the Adirondacks. Part freecycle, part special interest, the group offers tips, identification help, and, occasionally, free or free-for-trade plants. It’s a gardeners’ gathering place to post questions and receive advice on all aspects of Adirondack gardening.

In addition to successful plant swaps, they now have a ’seed train.’ A seed train is sort of like a chain letter — it’s a big envelope that travels from home to home, with each participant taking the seeds they can use and replacing those with extra seeds they have to share. It’s an honor-system program and, in the past, some have been less than honorable, thus ruining the fun for everyone — so they are careful to limit the number of ‘new’ members on each train.

If it sounds like something you’d enjoy, you might try starting something similar on your own … perhaps with relatives or coworkers. Or you can sign up to join the Lower Adirondack PlantCycle group and see if they let you hop on one of this year’s trains or put you on the list for next year!

    I’m now singing “Peace Train”…..

Really good idea though. I have envelopes full of seeds from a master gardener in Ohio. I’ll have to send her some of mine after the summer.
