Chowderfest goes green

Chowderfest — the annual celebration of the hearty soup — is going green this year.

A letter from the Saratoga Convention and Tourism Bureau that arrived at our office this morning says organizers plan to use biodegradable potato starch spoons, that ballots for judging the chowders will be printed on recycled paper and that event t-shirts will have a “environmentally friendly theme” (they’ll also be, of course, green).

The efforts are being coordinated at the behest of Kristine Bellino, the organizer of the Saratoga Environmental Expo.

This year’s event is scheduled to run form 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Jan. 31 (a special birthday treat for yours truly apparently). Last  year, organizers said more than 5,000 people attended. The crowd is expected to swell this year, if the number of t-shirts ordered is any indication. Last year, 1,400 were made. This year, organizers are ordering 2,000.
