Broadalbin-Perth off to states

Saturday, November 14th, 2009

Broadalbin-Perth defeated Plattsburgh (of Section VII), 2-0, in the Class B regional final to move onto the state final four in Oneonta next Saturday (Nov. 21) at 10:30 a.m., and will play Marcellus of Section 3.

Also, Waterford topped Northern Adirondack, 4-2, in the other state regional final (Class C).

Here’s an interesting tid-bit from the game recap e-mailed by Waterford’s coach, Fred Engelmann. It’s the start of a “game recap highlights” list I’m compiling from the season — the more creative, the better!

“Waterford overcame a bus mix-up just to get to today’s Regional Class C final, but they made the most of it once they got there. Arriving only 20 minutes before game time, the Fordians quickly warmed up and the game got underway. The light rain was not a factor and the Queensbury pitch, all sandy soil, was excellent.”

Props to Queensbury and its fields!

PK video; B-P game time

Friday, November 13th, 2009

Two completely separate things, but I wanted to share a You Tube video related to penalty kicks — and you thought they couldn’t get any more controversial (don’t worry, this doesn’t involve physical contact!)

Check out the link, and don’t try this at home (I’m sure it’s discouraged).

On another note, Broadalbin-Perth plays in the Class B regional final against Section VII’s Plattsburgh on Saturday at Queensbury High School at 1 p.m.

The other game taking place at Queensbury is the Class C regional final: Waterford vs. Section VII’s Northern Adirondack (12 p.m.)

One more thing, the Foothills Council and Adirondack League all-stars are in Saturday’s print edition. Cut it out and pin it up! (Wasaren and MVAC to come when there’s space…)

B-P takes all; Saratoga to try

Tuesday, November 10th, 2009

Second-seeded Broadalbin-Perth topped Johnstown, 1-0, on Monday night, after the ninth-seeded Sir Bills made a commendable run for the Section II Class B title.

The Patriots’ Madison Wilcox scored 20 minutes into the first half, off a feed from Caleb Gruet. Jared LaPorte secured his ninth shutout (the team’s 13th) in goal. B-P as the Class B champions also won the Foothills Council with South High.

Tuesday night at 5 p.m., Saratoga and Shenendehowa face off for the Class AA title at Colonie High School. The Blue Streaks will be seeking revenge since Shen took them out of the tournament last year with a 5-0 decision in the quarterfinal.

Saratoga enters as the Suburban Council third seed and Shen is the No. 1.

See the game preview.

There is still one local team still going strong — Saratoga is in the Class AA final against Shen (Tuesday, Colonie, 5 p.m.) — but if yours is not, please keep checking back to the blog. There’s more!

  • I’ll be posting any league all-star team as soon as I get them. (I’ve been out of the office for a day, so if one or more are there when I get back, they’ll be up Monday night.)
  • Also, look out for our PS Varsity All-Area team, but give me some time to get that together — the season has to end first for every local team, and there are some big decisions to make!

Also, two Foothills teams, Johnstown and Broadalbin-Perth, go at it Monday at 7 p.m. at Colonie H.S. in the Class B final.

Do the ninth-ranked Sir Bills have a chance at topping B-P as the Foothills Council co-champions?

Bolton, Glens Falls downed by defending champs

Saturday, November 7th, 2009

In Saturday’s Class D game in Colonie, Bolton fell to Northville 3-2 in one overtime. Glens Falls lost the next game, the Class A championship, to Mohonasen by the same final score, 3-2, at the end of regulation.

Both teams hung their heads, but both made commendable strides throughout the season to get that far.

Bolton (16-3) made an incredible run in its debut in Section II, beating out the best of the Adirondack League teams and nearly topping the 2008 Class D champs (the Eagles outplayed Northville for most of the second half and the beginning of overtime — the game was decided by a one-time header off a corner kick).

See the game story.

Other notes: As Bolton head coach Francisco Roca put it, his team played solid “from top to bottom,” with every player in every position doing their job.

Todd Markham man-marked one of Northville’s most dangerous players, Jimmy Cole, and hardly allowed him to touch the ball, let alone get a shot off.

Harry Caldwell and Conor Smith blocked Josh Ostrander’s flip-throw by standing in front of him on the sideline with one hand blocking their face and the other below the belt. Caldwell was hit in the chest the first time, while smiling and continuing to laugh it off after. Ostrander was able to lob it over their heads for the rest of the game.

Mitchell Jordon made several tremendous saves in net, and Dan Brown drove the team through the midfield, winning most every 50-50 ball.

Glens Falls (12-7-1) proved itself as better than average, which most of its Foothills Council contenders expected the Indians to be. They topped South Glens Falls as the league co-champion in the Class A semifinal and went further than any other Foothills team this year in sectionals. Their game was not as close, after falling behind 3-0 at halftime, but the final score indicated that this Indians squad does not go down without trying.

See the game story.

Other notes: Chris Reynolds notched his first two goals of the season in the 3-2 loss. Both came in the second half, the first about midway through off a shot from 25-yards out. He paused for a moment after it sailed over Mohonasen’s keeper and just under the crossbar, before jumping to celebrate that it went it. His second came after he and Michael Rankin-Byrne crashed the net, and he connected on the lobbed ball.

One local team still remains… Saratoga in the Class AA final on Tuesday at Colonie High School (5 p.m.) against Suburban Council champ and top-seeded Shenendehowa.
